What is Optimism?

1 min read Updated

Optimism is an Ethereum Layer 2 optimistic rollup and the creator of the OP Stack — an open-source framework for building L2 chains that powers Base, Zora, and the growing Superchain ecosystem.

WHY IT MATTERS

Optimism's significance extends beyond its own chain. The OP Stack — the modular, open-source framework powering Optimism — has been adopted by Coinbase (Base), Worldcoin, Sony, and dozens of others to launch their own L2s.

This creates the 'Superchain' vision: a network of interoperable OP Stack chains sharing security and liquidity. Instead of a single L2, it's a scalable network of specialized chains.

Optimism pioneered retroactive public goods funding (RetroPGF), distributing millions to builders who create value for the ecosystem. This governance innovation, alongside the technical product, distinguishes Optimism in the L2 landscape.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the OP Stack?
An open-source, modular framework for building L2 rollup chains. It includes consensus, execution, and settlement components that anyone can deploy. Base and Zora are built on it.
What is the Superchain?
A network of OP Stack chains that share security, bridging, and communication. The vision: seamless cross-chain interaction between all OP Stack chains.
Optimism vs Arbitrum?
Comparable performance and cost. Optimism's advantage is the OP Stack ecosystem and Superchain vision. Arbitrum has larger TVL and native DeFi ecosystem.
