What is Polygon?

1 min read Updated

Polygon is a multi-chain scaling ecosystem for Ethereum that includes a PoS sidechain, zkEVM rollup, and CDK framework — providing various scaling approaches under one brand.

WHY IT MATTERS

Polygon started as a PoS sidechain (Matic Network) offering cheap Ethereum-compatible transactions. It has since evolved into a suite of scaling solutions: Polygon PoS (sidechain), Polygon zkEVM (ZK rollup), and Polygon CDK (chain development kit).

The Polygon PoS chain achieved significant adoption for NFTs, gaming, and consumer applications. Major brands (Starbucks, Nike, Reddit) chose Polygon for its low costs and Ethereum compatibility.

The ecosystem is transitioning toward ZK-based security — Polygon zkEVM posts validity proofs to Ethereum, providing stronger security guarantees than the PoS sidechain.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is Polygon a Layer 2?
Polygon PoS is technically a sidechain (own security). Polygon zkEVM is a true L2 (inherits Ethereum security). The ecosystem includes both approaches.
What happened to MATIC token?
MATIC was rebranded to POL as the ecosystem evolved. POL serves as the native token across the Polygon ecosystem.
Polygon vs other L2s?
Polygon PoS has lower security guarantees but massive adoption. Polygon zkEVM competes directly with other ZK rollups. The CDK enables custom chain deployment.
